A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
