Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
