The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
