Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
