The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
